On the lawn UofL Commencement ceremonies have been held at various locations throughout the years. In 1887, medical school students received diplomas at Macauley's Theater in downtown Louisville. Starting in the late 1940s, the university favored outdoor ceremonies on the oval in front of Grawemeyer Hall, like the one pictured here in the 1960s. The final outdoor ceremony was held in 1986 on The Oval. Since then, Commencement has been held indoors at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center and the KFC Yum! Center.
