69 SUMMER 2018 Howard Stacey, 61A and Bud Olsen, 62A Former Cardinal greats Howard Stacey, 61A, and Bud Olsen, 62A, died within a week of each other this spring. Stacey passed away March 5 and Olsen passed away March 12. Stacey, a starting guard, played on Uof L's first NCAA Final Four basketball team in 1959. In 1961 he was drafted by the NBA's St. Louis Hawks in the third round, turn- ing down the offer to stay in Louisville and teach and coach at Durrett High School. He returned to the University of Louisville as an assistant coach, and became the Cardinals' interim head coach on Jan. 3, 1971. Stacey went on to accept an offer to be the head coach at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. A 6-foot-8 center, Olsen scored 1,192 career points in his three seasons with the Cardinals. He averaged 20.8 points per game his senior year, which ranks as the eighth highest in Uof L history. He was selected by the Cincinnati Royals in the sec- ond round of the 1962 NBA draft, and played seven seasons in the NBA. He spent the 1969–70 season with the Kentucky Colonels of the American Basketball Association. Sue Grafton, 61A World renowned author Sue Grafton, 61A, died in December after battling cancer. Grafton was best known for her alphabet mystery series, featuring female hard- boiled private investigator, Kinsey Millhone, which she began writing in 1982. She completed 25 international bestsellers in the series, from "A is for Alibi" to "Y is for Yesterday," before her death. Her work is published in 28 countries and 26 languages. Grafton earned a bachelor's degree in English from Uof L and received the Dis- tiguished Alumna Award in 1993 and Alumna of the Year in 1997. She was inducted into the College of Arts & Sciences Hall of Honor in 2007. She joined the American Academy of Achievement in 2000 and was honored as Kentucky's 2007 Distin- guished American by the A.B. "Happy" Chandler Foundation. James T.R. Jones, Brandeis School of Law Professor James T.R. Jones, who was on the law school faculty since 1986, died May 3. Jones was well known for his mental health advocacy. Since then, he wrote and spoke extensively about success- ful professionals who suffer from serious psychiatric diseases. Jones was featured in a September 2016 "Chronicle of Higher Education" article about professors who built careers while living with mental illness. In recognition of Jones' mental health advocacy efforts, Mental Health America of Kentucky presented him with the Clifford W. Beers Mental Health Consumer Award for 2010. In addition to his mental health advocacy and schol- arship, Jones focused his teaching and research on domestic violence, professional liability, torts, dece- dents' estates, legal writing and written advocacy.
