10 UOFLMAGAZINE.COM T he University of Louisville Dwight Anderson Memorial Music Library houses one of the world's finest repositories of music compositions: the Grawemeyer Collection of Contemporary Music. Ewa Jabłczyńska and Dariusz Kupiński, a wife and husband team who make up the Kupiński Guitar Duo, are immersing themselves in the collection for 18 months thanks to a prestigious grant from the Polish government. The fellowship, given by Poland's Ministry of Science in Higher Education, usually is reserved for scientists. The two are the first artists to receive it. As visiting research scholars, they'll comb through the collection, which includes scores, recordings and documents for more than 5,000 entries, many of which are unpub- lished and unavailable elsewhere. "There are many pieces that have probably never been performed or even revised," Jabłczyńska said. "Our goal is to discover new compositions for guitar or chamber music with guitar." The two plan to record a CD in Louisville of them performing pieces from the collection. While they are here, they'll also do concerts on campus and elsewhere, and lead masterclasses. "Their study is really the first of this scope," said Stephen Mattingly, Uof L associate professor of guitar, UofL's Music Library hosts Polish guitar duo who met the couple while he was performing and teaching in Poland. "The length of time and amount of the award is quite significant and speaks to the prestige and quality of the Grawemeyer collection." The Grawemeyer Awards, established by philanthropist Charles Grawemeyer, recognize outstanding works in music composition, ideas improving world order, psychology and education, and gives a religion prize jointly with Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Winners of the award receive $100,000 each. The Grawemeyer Collection is comprised of nominations for the award dating back to 1985.
