27 WINTER/SPRING 2018 Second grader Natalia Garza likes doing the crabwalk while classmate Rianne Adams said she likes all the exercises. The two students at Hawthorne Elementary School in Louisville are part of a Uof L research project called Minds in Motion. All of Hawthorne's second through fifth grade students spend 15 minutes a day in the gym, rolling on mats, hopping, doing eye drills and other exercises. "We are looking at the correlation to see if it improves their balance, motor skills and, perhaps most importantly, their behavior and performance in the classroom" said Daniela Terson De Paleville, assistant professor in health and sport sciences and the lead researcher for the project. Hawthorne Principal Jessica Rosenthal called it "a wonderful experience for our kids," while teacher Shayla Hernandez credited the Minds in Motion activities with a marked improvement in her students' attention spans. Terson de Paleville said if the results of her research at Hawthorne coupled with findings from a similar project at an Indiana school show academic improvement is tied to exercise, Minds in Motion will be a good model for other schools to follow. "It's not a magic process" she said. "It's something that will take time and dedication". Rosenthal A t the end of each fall and spring semester, Uof L students are invited to submit online nomina- tions of the faculty, staff or graduate teaching assistants who have made a difference to their learning in the classroom and beyond. The top nominees are dubbed "Faculty Favorites," and for the 2016-17 academic year, six professors stood out from the rest. Students submitted 624 nomina- tions for 334 faculty members from the 2016-17 academic year. On Feb. 9, 2018, Provost Dale Billingsley recognized all nominees during the annual Celebration of Teaching and Learning conference.
