23 WINTER/SPRING 2018 When Zed Saeed moved from Los Angeles to Louisville a few years ago, he brought with him a successful career in film, television and photog- raphy. But he'd long wanted to pur- sue a graduate degree. At UofL, he found Hite Art Insti- tute, connected with photography professor Mary Carothers, and fell in love with the department's old large-format, studio camera. The rest is history. One semester in, and he's already completed a project photograph- ing refugees in the west Louisville that landed a cover spread in Lou- isville Magazine. He also received a grant from the prestigious Kentucky Documentary Photographic Project to photograph refugees in Bowling Green, Kentucky. "I am unable to connect to the world without photography," he said. "At Hite, you can walk in here and say that, and everyone says, 'yep, you're in the right place. We'll support you, we'll work with you.' They gave me a home." spotlight ZED SAEED student
