15 FALL 2017 The University of Louisville was the first school in the South to offer an LGBTQ Studies minor, thanks to Associate Professor Kaila Story, the Audre Lorde Endowed Chair in Race, Class, Gender and Sexuality. Story developed the minor in 2009 and in June, she was recognized by NBC Out, a division of NBC News, as one of the 30 most influential LGBTQ people in the country. "I think it's important that our LGBTQ see them- selves reflected within our curricula," Story said. "It not only gives them a sense of where they fit in history, but it also gives them folks to admire and allows them to gain a better sense of self." Story said she was humbled to be named to NBC's inaugural list of top 30 LGBTQ influencers, adding that her passion for social change helps motivate her to teach. spotlight K AIL A STORY faculty
