MUSIC The sound of excellence: Jazz Fest celebrates 25 years Since 1992, UofL's Jazz Fest has brought the most celebrated names in jazz to Louisville for concerts, workshops and master classes, so- lidifying the School of Music's Jamey Aebersold Jazz Studies Program as one of the best in the country. Jazz Fest 2017, which celebrated that 25-year legacy, was no dif- ferent, with a slate of high-caliber musicians from around the world performing on campus Feb. 22-25. Acclaimed trombone player Wycliffe Gordon headlined the event. His enviable resume includes 14 citations for being the world's finest trombone player. Metta Quintet, the resident ensemble for JazzReach, a nation- ally recognized New York City jazz education nonprofit, played as well. But Mike Tracy, director of the festival and the School of Music's jazz studies program, was most proud of international night, which featured musicians from Colombia, Brazil and other countries. He had met several of the musicians in his travels last year as a Fulbright senior specialist to Tbilisi, Georgia, where he taught workshops and performed at the Kavkaz Jazz Festival. "This night is really a highlight for me. It brings the collaboration between UofL and the Tbilisi State Conservatoire full circle," Tracy said. Jazz Fest explores America's indigenous music and is part of UofL's observance of Black History Month. Musicians who've played through the years include Dave Brubeck, Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Dr. Billy Tayor, Marian McPartland, Wynton Marsalis, Michael Brecker, Toots Thielemans, Paquito D'Rivera, The Heath Brothers and more.
