She had just tied Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky for first place. Comerford and Ledecky, representing Stanford University, were among the competitors in the 2017 NCAA Women's Championship 200 meter freestyle in April. In a shocking finish, Comerford caught up to the Olympian in the final 50 meters to tie for first. The winning time of 1:40.36 was the second-fastest ever recorded for the NCAA event and bested Comerford's old school record by a second and a half. "Anytime you get to race against girls like that who compete at the highest level, it makes you a better racer," said Comerford. "Being able to race great competition is always a benefit." Comerford's win secured the Cardinals' sixth consecutive NCAA Championship in swim- ming. She credits the Cards' dedication and the quality of UofL's athletics program with helping her achieve this distinction. "Working with my team every day and having the coaches and resources that Louisville offers give me the opportunity to compete at the highest level," said Comer- ford. "My coaches, teammates and family have always believed in me, so the easy access to success and the experiences I've had here at Louisville have really helped me." Comerford's sights are now set on qualifying to swim for Team USA at the World Championship trials at the end of June. But in the meantime, she has a short-term goal: "I just want to continue swimming, working hard and loving it."
