E D U raiseRED collects record funds for pediatric cancer Student philanthropy group raiseRED collected a record $459,402 at its annual dance marathon Feb. 24-25 at the Student Activities Center. The all- night dance marathon featured more than 1,100 student dancers who each committed to raise at least $100. The money, committed during the months leading up to the event, supports pediatric cancer research and care at the University of Louisville. The University of Louisville Women's Center kicked off its 25th anniversary celebration with a reception honoring the past and charging into the future. The reception, held March 21 in Bigelow Hall, featured remarks from Director Valerie Casey, Vice Provost Mordean Taylor-Archer and students who have been impacted by the center. "The Women's Center has made a huge impact on women, and there is much more good work to do," Casey said. The UofL Women's Center serves as a catalyst for empowering women at UofL through its services. The center has secured funding to create new programs, including past federal grants of $1.2 million to establish the PEACC Program, which continues to offer programs and initiatives aimed at eliminating violence against women, and more than $96,000 for the establishment of the KTAP [Kentucky Transtional Assistance Program] for single student parents. The center continues to be involved in campus activities including Women's Equality Day, Equal Pay Day and the Kentucky Women's Book Festival. In the past five years, the center has focused on women's empowerment and leadership initiatives including support of the Women 4 Women Student Board, Student Parent Association and American Association of University Women Student Groups. Signature programs include a statewide College Women's Leadership Conference, a Human Trafficking Awareness Conference, a post doc support program, a Campus Talk dialogue series and Global Trips examining women's issues in Peru, Morocco, Spain and an upcoming trip to India. The Women's Center will con- tinue to celebrate the anniversary throughout the year, culminating in a birthday celebration Aug. 24.
