Staying on course, managing each challenge as it comes along, staying af oat. It's almost impossible without a co-captain. For University of Louisville students, that co- captain is Patricia Condon, PhD, Director of National and International Scholarship Opportunities. In the tumultuous terrain of national awards, Condon has a keen eye for matching students with opportunities and mentoring them through the application process — a skill that has both shaped and solidif ed UofL's reputation for making prestigious honors accessible to all students. It all started in 2001 when Condon was hired by the UofL Board of Overseers to provide support for students interested in earning scholarships, while also boosting the university's reputation as a prominent research institution. She quickly saw that UofL students were uniquely equipped for the Fulbright Scholarship. "Fulbright wants a variety of young students from various backgrounds," explains Condon. "In fact, the more a student is not a middle-of-the-road, typical American, the better their chances…. So we eventually started reaching out to as broad a cross-section of the university community as we can." In 2003, her intuition was validated. Three UofL students won Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships (ETA). For comparison, the university had previously had only f ve Fulbrighters in its entire history. Now, as another high-achieving year unfolds, one thing is clear: the success of current and former Fulbrighters has built a culture of academic excellence at the University of Louisville. "Fulbright almost acts like the hook to bring in the right kind of students," says Condon. "Now, sometimes, people even come to me and say their parents told them 'You need to go to UofL because they win Fulbrights,'" she says, laughing.
