E D U SCHOOL OF MUSIC Two groups bring new sound to School of Music There's a different beat echoing throughout the School of Music with the addition of two performance ensembles. Instrumentalists and vocalists are getting in on the action with the newly formed UofL Steel Drum Band and the a cappella group Cardinal Rule. The rhythms of the Caribbean arrived on campus with the UofL Steel Drum Band last January. The group, under the direction of Professor Greg Byrne, is one of several new percussion styles available to students. Students in the department also have the opportunity to learn Brazilian, Afro-Cuban and West African genres. "I want our students to come out of here not only knowing concert percussion, but world percussion," Byrne said. The ensemble Cardinal Rule chimed in on the recent a cappella trend, allowing UofL vocalists to showcase their talents in a way different from traditional chamber music. The group's f rst public performance was at the UofL Spectacular in September. Highlights SCHOOL OF NURSING Six outstanding nurses honored This past November, more than 250 students, faculty and alumni of the School of Nursing and members of the Kentuckiana nursing community gathered at the Mellwood Arts Center to recognize six outstanding nurses at the school's inaugural Florence Nightingale Awards in Nursing. Dean Marcia Hern and emcee Candyce Clift honored the award winners, each of whom took a moment to address the guests. President James Ramsey and Executive Vice President for Health Affairs David Dunn were on hand to celebrate the achievements of the honorees and the School of Nursing. The Florence Nightingale Awards in Nursing marked the close of the 40th Anniversary year of the School of Nursing. 2014 Florence Nightingale Award Recipients: Carolyn E. New Music Festival features top Euro- pean composers The annual New Music Festival held in November at the School of Music was a worldwide affair. Along with Danish composer Bent Sorensen, the featured guest com- poser, international artists included Polish composers Agata Zubel, Cezary Duchnowski and Pawel Hendrich, as well as Danish pianist Katrine Gislinge. The Polish composers in particular brought a different feel to this year's festival. "These are three composers of the same generation that create somewhat of a commu- nity of composers all coming from differ- ent perspectives," festival director Krzysztof Wolek said. "They also represent social change that hap- pened in Poland in the late '80s when commu- nism collapsed and the artistic life was basically free again." During the festival, the wind ensemble premiered Sorensen's "Nocturns," and several more of his works were performed by university ensembles and choirs. "Our students and guests had the opportuni- ty to hear the highest level of musical performance and learn the newest tech- niques for composition," Wolek said.
