Editor's Note Fall 2011 Welcome …to the new University of Louisville Magazine! Great things are happening everywhere at UofL. From excellence in academics and athletics to groundbreaking research in our labs and a nearly total renovation of the student experience on Belknap Campus, we are seeing extraordi- nary results from the hard work of students, staff, faculty, administrators and coaches. And as our campuses and university have been transformed, it's only appropriate that our fl agship publication, UofL Magazine, refl ects that change. That's the primary motiva- tion behind the new look we created for this magazine: We want to mirror all the positive news we have to share within these pages with a design that is contemporary and elegant, entertaining and interesting. Inside, you'll fi nd several new sections, renamed and revamped to offer you a more current perspective of campus events, alumni life and updates on our academic units. In ad- dition, we'll be offering more in-depth feature stories in each issue to give you a unique look at the people and places you may not have thought about in a while, but hope you remember fondly. And speaking of fond memories, we would not be doing justice to the scores of issues that came before without paying homage to the many covers that have been displayed in the living rooms and offi ces of our "Cardinal faith- ful" both in Kentucky and across the country. The covers of every issue since this publication's inception will speak to someone about a special time when you were commuting to or living on campus, celebrating an athletic victory or attending a class. We hope you enjoy the trip back in time as much as we did, and look forward to hearing your thoughts about our new look and revised content. Go Cards! Now & Then UofL Photographic Archives houses almost two million photographs and associated records and manuscripts, including many decades of cam- pus images. "Now & Then", a new feature of this magazine, includes a current-day photograph on the inside front cover, with a corresponding image from the past on the inside back cover.
