E D U Highlights Center team aims to help torture survivors recover UofL student and Uganda native Filder Auma intends to work as a counselor one day, helping other sufferers move beyond past hor- rors to build a better life, just as the UofL-managed Survivors of Torture Recovery Center (STRC) is assisting her. "I feel like I'm getting better physically and mentally," she said. "I'm learning a lot and I'm meeting good people who inspire me to get better." In the United States for a decade, she relocated to Louisville, a popular resettlement area, less than a year ago. Besides her campus classes, Auma attends sessions at the STRC to work with a multidisciplinary team that includes Kent School of Social Work faculty and students and community specialists. "It's a very delicate, careful process" using a person-centered approach, said Bibhuti Sar, the social work professor who leads the project. Refugees referred there go through an assessment to determine exactly which services they need based on their physical and psychological state. Through a three-year, $975,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Hu- man Services, the center offers conf dential medical and mental health services and legal and social service referrals for refu- gees victimized by torture. With community partners, the center intends to serve at least 600 tor- ture survivors from all over the world, train 300 professionals and educate another 300 people about survival and recovery. RAYMOND A. KENT SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK Filder Auma, a UofL student from Uganda, relies on help from the Survivors of Torture Recovery Center. "Kent School has an endowed chair in oncology social work, so we thought working with Gilda's Club would be a good way to honor that association," said 2011 graduate Kate Dennis (third from left, foreground). Making their match Fourth-year medical student Bethany Graham, center, reacts with joy upon learning she matched to her preferred psychiatric residency program at the University of Colorado Boulder. On March 21, the School of Medicine Class of 2014 celebrated its matches — and a 97 percent match rate — during National Residency Match Day.
