The factory represents a new manufacturing model, a platform for a global community of innovators to prototype, iterate and refi ne existing GE products, and to develop new designs. In addition to enabling community members to work alongside FirstBuild employees, the FirstBuild factory allows students to conduct research while getting practical training on the latest additive manufac- turing and technologies. "Together, we're fi nding new ways to grow technologies and our economy while giving our students real-world engineering experiences," said President James Ramsey. Recently GE named UofL one of its "ex- ecutive schools," a designation shared with only 46 other universities across the country. UofL joins institutions such as Indiana University, the University of Cincinnati, the University of Notre Dame and Georgia Tech in this elite group, which provides engineering students with enhanced recruitment and career advancement opportunities. Ann Larson named dean Ann Larson, a 19-year veteran of the university, has been named dean of the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD). She began her new role July 1. Larson has served the college as a professor and vice dean and excels at teacher preparation, forging community partner- ships, professional development and adult learning. When making the announcement last April, Provost Shirley Willihnganz said, "Ann is innovative, results-oriented and has an outstanding national reputation. She has the heart of a teacher, the mind of a strategist, and she knows how to build an effective team." Larson began her career as a middle and high school teacher. She later moved into administrative roles and began focusing on community-school district partnerships and teacher training and accountability. She earned a doctoral degree from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. "I'm truly excited about the opportunity to lead and serve as the next dean for the college," Larson said. SPEED SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING Highlights Believing in Belize "Life changing" is how CEHD students describe the International Teaching Expe- rience (ITE) in Belize. Now in its fourth year, the ITE is so popular that an extra trip was organized last spring so more students could go. Participants spend up to two weeks in the Central American country to hone teaching skills. Nearly 100 CEHD students have traveled to Belize since the program's inception, and college administrators say more international teaching pro- grams are in the works. Student Ashley Ferry plays with children during her trip to Belize. President James R. Ramsey describes the mutual benefi ts of the FirstBuild microfactory on UofL's Belknap campus. Student Erin Reid Black (center) poses with elementary students in Belize. Student Kara Hart gets a hug and smiles from her students in Belize.
