A C R O S S C A M P U S Art collection receives International Honor Quilt The Hite Art Institute now houses the "International Honor Quilt," an as- semblage of more than 600 quilted triangles honoring women, thanks to a gift from the nonprof t art organization Through the Flower, founded by noted artist Judy Chicago. The colorful array of interchangeable 2-foot sections came from makers who answered Chicago's invitation to submit quilts honoring women of their choice. Created in 1980, the work accompanied her worldwide traveling exhibition "The Dinner Party" celebrating women's achievements. "I can't tell you how grateful we are for this amazing gift," Provost Shirley Willihnganz said at an announcement attended by Chicago and Through the Flower representatives. Besides future exhibitions, the gift provides "enormous opportunities for research here at the university and enormous opportunities for us to partner with other organizations." Recognized expert and Kentucky Quilt Project Inc. founder Shelly Zegart, who met Chicago during a 1985 Louisville visit, was instrumental in arrang- ing the gift. "I am honored to have been the catalyst to bring the 'International Honor Quilt' to Kentucky, a state well-known for its quilt-making traditions and activities," Zegart said. Depictions include famous f gures and groups, such as Mother Teresa and the League of Women Voters, as well as relatives, artists and teachers who inf uenced the quilters. Most came with descriptions of their makers and subjects; Marilee Schmit Nason originally cataloged the work and provided materials that are part of the gift. "It's fabulous that attention is going to be called to women known and unknown through the 'International Honor Quilt' at the University of Louisville," Chicago said. A portion of the "International Honor Quilt" artwork honoring women was displayed for the announcement of the gift from the nonprof t art organization Through the Flower. COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES Provost Shirley Willihnganz spoke at the announcement, as did Kentucky Quilt Project Inc. founder Shelly Zegart and artist Judy Chicago (left to right) Physics students keep chapter nationally recognized UofL's Society of Physics Students (SPS) chapter continues to earn national kudos for its outreach and excellence as a top-tier scientif c club.
