S U M M E R U O F L M A G A Z I N E | 21 H A P P E N I N G H E R E Q&A; with Shoni Schimmel Shortly after the WNBA draft, UofL magazine caught up with Shoni to discuss her achievements at UofL and future plans. Q. How diff cult was it to leave Oregon for Louisville? What was your f rst impression of your new home? A. It was pretty diff cult to leave Oregon just because I had never been away for such a long time period. I was nervous about moving half way across the country to Louisville, but I under- stood that going to college was only going to be four years of my life. I thought I made the best of making Louisville my new home away from home. Q. How big a help was your mom's encourage- ment in leaving Oregon? How did it prepare you? A. It was huge. My mom always led me in the right direction throughout my life. It helped me prepare myself in order to actually take the next step in my life, and that was to go off to college and be the best I could be. Q. Being a role model was a big part of your identity at UofL. Do you have any specif c plans to stay involved with young people in Atlanta? A. Of course! I'm always going to want to be able to give back to the fans. Whatever it may be, I would like to do some camps and also just be able to talk to and inter- act with the fans. Q. How do you feel you have grown as a person over your time at UofL? A. I've grown up. I was able to mature and grow into the person I am today. It was good to go through the experience I went through, being away from my family, because it helped me grow up both on and off the court. I feel like I grew on the court the most, because I was able to take my game to the next level and learn more things about the game of basketball. Q. When someone asks you about your time at UofL, how will you describe it? A. Being at Louisville was just a great experience overall. It was more than basketball — it was an unbelievable college, and the people were always so caring. In my honest opinion it was the best decision I could have made when it came to picking a college. It will be something I will never forget. Louisville f rst, Cards forever. Q. Of all your accom- plishments at UofL, what are you most proud of? A. There a few things that come to mind. The f rst one would have to be being the eighth pick of the WNBA draft. I think out of all the accomplish- ments that one was the biggest to me. I also enjoyed being a part of that run in 2013, making it to the Final Four and playing for a National Championship. Lastly joining that 2,000-point club in scoring was a huge accomplishment for me. Winning the three- point contest was one of my favorite memories as well. Record-breaking 3 Cards selected in 1st round of NFL draft On the fi rst day of the National Football League draft, it was once again a good day to be a Cardinal. The New York Jets selected safety Calvin Pryor with the 18th pick, the Philadelphia Eagles took defensive end Marcus Smith at the 26ths spot and the Minnesota Vikings traded up to acquire the rights to quarterback Teddy Bridgewater with the 32nd selection. Only Texas A&M; had as many players drafted in the fi rst round in 2014, while Alabama, Auburn and Ohio State each saw two players taken in the fi rst round.
