Alumni Spotlight Phillip Bailey, 07A
A voice for everyone
As the debate over same-sex marriage took to the
national stage, WFPL's Phillip Bailey, 07A, decided
to take a closer look at what issues were the most
important inside the LGBT community with the
nine-part "Defning Fairness" series. To his
surprise, marriage equality was not necessarily
on the top of the list.
"The LGBT community is very diverse and
includes people with various backgrounds, so
depending on who you ask you'd get different
answers," Bailey said. "One group would focus on
homelessness, while another was more concerned
with AIDS prevention. Gay marriage, while getting
a lot of attention, was not necessarily the most
important to everyone."
The Radio and Television News Director
Association recognized Bailey, along with producer
Laura Ellis, with the organization's Unity Award.
He accepts the award at the organization's Edward
R. Murrow Award Dinner in New York on Oct. 15.
