H A P P E N I N G H E R E Spanning the globe Six student athletes spent part of the summer representing their countries in international competition. Luke Hancock, the Most Outstanding Player at the men's Final Four in Atlanta in the spring, served as the offcial fag-bearer for the U.S. delegation of athletes at the World University Games (WUG) in Russia. Hancock averaged nearly 11 points per game, with a gamehigh 27 points in a 94-85 loss to Canada. The United States fnished in ninth place overall in basketball. Senior guard Shoni Schimmel came off the bench to help the U.S. team win its third straight WUG gold medal, easily toppling host Russia 90-71, while Cardinal women's soccer player Charlyn Corral helped her native Mexico take home the silver medal in that sport. Corral led all scorers with nine goals in the tournament. Sophomore forward Montrezl Harrell earned gold, leading the U.S. hoops team to an 82-68 win against Serbia at the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship in Prague, Czech Republic. Harrell's 17-point, fourrebound, four-blocked-shot effort in the fnals spurred the U.S. team to its frst U19 championship since 2009. Senior guard Russ Smith represented the United States as a member of the East Coast All Stars at the Four Nations Cup in Tallinn, Estonia. Smith averaged 23 points a game, and scored 30 in the tournament fnale against Estonia. The East Coast All Stars fnished third in the tournament. Lisbon, Portugal native and two-time Olympian Carlos Almeida set two Portuguese national swimming records at the European Championships in Debrecen, Hungary, in both the 50- and 100-meter breaststroke. Insurance and financial investment giant Northwestern Mutual purchased the 2013 Final Four court and has donated it to UofL, which will cut most of it into souvenir pieces for fans. Proceeds will help fund the fight against pediatric cancer. Coach Rick Pitino also will autograph 1,000 of the souvenir pieces in an effort to raise even more money for charity.
