Athletics Affirmation and recognition UofL is transforming itself into one of the preeminent athletics programs in the country and people are starting to take notice. • CBS Sports named UofL the best athletic program in the country by virtue of completing the "Cardinal Slam" with its BCS bowl win, men's and women's Final Four appearances and a spot in the College World Series. • Men's basketball coach Rick Pitino racked up the off-season accolades, gaining entrance into the Basketball Hall of Fame class and taking home the ESPY in the Best Coach/Manager of the Year category. He traded quips with President Barack Obama at the White House and was named Louisvillian of the Year by the Advertising Federation of Louisville. • UofL football was #8 in ESPN's preseason power rankings, while the Associated Press and USA Today polls slated the Cardinals at the #9 spot. • Follow the Cards at or on Twitter, @UofLSports Noteworthy Woodruff tackles teen violence As a judge in his adopted hometown of Pittsburgh, former UofL gridiron great and Steeler pro bowler Dwayne Woodruff has joined the fght against teen violence by working as the co-chair of Allegheny County's "Do the Write Thing Challenge." The program helps young people express how 22|LOUISVILLE.EDU violence has impacted their lives through written essays and classroom discussions. "Most violence is premeditated due to a lack of compassion or understanding," Woodruff said. "This program bridges the gap by giving kids an open forum to talk about the violence they experienced. The better understanding you have, the less violent you are likely to become." He is equally committed to UofL, and has been a key supporter of academic services for the football program. The Dwayne Woodruff Academic Unit, named in his honor in December 2006, provides football student-athletes with academic support, counseling, and promotes community service and civic responsibility.
