News & Impact Sen. Marco Rubio visits McConnell Center U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio (FL) visited the Belknap campus to outline ways the U.S. government can foster conditions of growth that not only assure the country maintains an exceptional and vibrant middle class, but will also allow it to maintain its unique place in the world. Rubio, who was a guest of the McConnell Center and a part of the center's Distinguished Speakers Series, explored a number of topics including government regulation, the cost of higher education and the need for job training. Rubio, who gave the Republican response following this year's State of the Union address, discussed the issue of illegal immigration. The Miami native, whose parents fed Cuba, has spent much of 2013 pushing for comprehensive immigration reform, which would address the estimated 11 million people who came to the U.S. illegally or overstayed visas. Before speaking to a packed house in the School of Music's Comstock Hall, the senator took time to meet informally with a group of McConnell Scholars. Europe Raising the bar UofL's mission to become one of the nation's premier metropolitan research universities received a major boost, with seven students earning prestigious Fulbright Scholarships, while four others won additional prominent awards for international study. Since 2003, UofL students have won 75 Fulbrights, more than all other Kentucky colleges combined. Of the seven Fulbright awardees, one will conduct independent research and six will teach English during their time abroad.
