SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY Improving the lives of Kentucky's children More than 2,000 children at six Jefferson County Public Schools learned about the importance of proper dental hygiene, and many received a free dental screening, through the efforts of the School of Dentistry, Smile Kentucky! and Aetna Better Health of Kentucky. The initiative, hosted on the American Dental Association's Give Kids a Smile Day, involved about 250 dental school faculty, staff and students along with community volunteers. Dental students and faculty screened children for signs of dental decay and cavities, and notif ed parents or legal guardians about the f ndings. These oral health evaluations also met the Kentucky dental screening requirement for school entry. Dental hygiene students visited classrooms and explained how to properly brush and f oss, and talked with children about how too much sugar can lead to cavities. President James Ramsey, right, conferred the 2015 Leigh Ann Conn Prize for Renewable Energy to Dr. Daniel Nocera, the Patterson Rookwood Professor of Energy at Harvard University. J.B. SPEED SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING Conn Prize goes to Harvard chemist The University of Louisville presented its 2015 Leigh Ann Conn Prize for Renewable Energy to Daniel Nocera, a world-renowned chemist and professor at Harvard University. The $50,000 prize, which is managed by the Conn Center for Renewable Energy Research at the J.B. Speed School of Engineering, recognizes outstanding renewable energy ideas and achievements with proven global impact. Nocera, the Patterson Rookwood Professor of Energy at Harvard, has found a way to convert sunlight into chemical fuel, much in the same way that plants create energy through photosynthesis. He's also a leading researcher in the effort to create a f ow battery that stores solar power. Nocera, who gave an on-campus lecture about his work, received his prize from President James Ramsey during a black-tie gala at Louisville's Brown Hotel in March. The award, f rst presented in 2014, is named for the late daughter of Hank and Rebecca Conn, who are center supporters and the prize benefactors. The inaugural prize was won by Michael Graetzel, developer of the dye- sensitized solar cell. The Conns helped create the Conn Center with a $20 million pledge. They also have endowed scholarships and faculty positions at the Speed School.
