Modeled after ESPN's ESPY Awards, the event was held downtown at the Louisville Palace, complete with red carpet. The top honor of the evening, The Louisville First Award, was presented to senior swimmer and four-time NCAA Champion Kelsi Worrell. This award is given to a student athlete who epitomizes "humble and hungry," the athletic department's culture. Putting Louisville First means excelling in the classroom, community and athletic competition — something that Worrell clearly demonstrates. She joins former UofL quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, now with the Minnesota Vikings, as the only two UofL athletes ever to receive the award. Worrell also won Adidas High Performance Athlete of the Year and Record Breaking Performance. The other recipient of the Adidas High Performance Athlete of the Year was freshman baseball player Brendan McKay. The award is based only upon athletic performance. McKay also received UofL Freshman of the Year. UofL's student athletes aren't just focused on athletic performance, but also team leadership and service. Men's basketball players Damion Lee and Trey Lewis, both graduate students, earned the Inspiration Award for exemplifying what a Louisville Cardinal is through their leadership in diffi cult times. The baseball team logged 2,611 community service hours, which in return earned them the Cardinal Dames CardsCARE award. These athletes put on a clinic while in the Dominican Republic, participated in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Race for the Cure and Wings Jack O' Lantern Stroll. Individual CardsCARE awards went to Tim Kubel (men's soccer) and Olivia Boesing (women's tennis). Kubel clocked in 207 hours tutoring middle school students in Vietnam as well as other activities. Boesing accumulated 249 hours by volunteering at Southeast Christian Church summer camp and led student athlete stations at the American Heart Association's Healthy Family Training Camp. UofL Athletics tackling football stadium expansion Papa John's Cardinal Stadium is "Coming Full Circle" with an upcoming expansion to add seats and update the football complex. The $55-million project will enclose the open end of the "'horseshoe" by adding 10,000 new seats for fans including 1,000 club seats, 70 premium boxes and 12 exclusive fi eld level suites. These new seats will have access to two gathering areas: The Pepsi Club and another, which will be similar to AT&T; Stadium in Dallas, Texas. In addition to new seating, the Howard Schnellenberger Football Complex will also be renovated to double in size with another 70,000 square feet. The Schnellenberger Complex revamp will increase space for team workouts and the weight room, as well as add a new state-of-the art hydrotherapy area. "It's our goal to make Papa John's Cardinal Stadium one of the top facilities in the nation," said Tom Jurich, director of athletics. "We feel we have an extraordinary plan in place that will excite our fan base and give us a chance to recruit some of the top student athletes in the country." Papa John's Cardinal Stadium's current capacity, which was expanded fi ve years ago, is 55,000. This project will expand the stadium seating to approximately 65,000.
