The four-story, $80 million academic building primarily will serve undergraduate students on the Belknap Campus. It will house more than 50 classrooms, science labs and group study areas, gathering spaces and food service options. It also will feature a student success center, which will integrate academic support, advising and career services and a new Academy for Teaching into one facility designed to improve the academic experience for undergraduate students and better prepare them for life after college. Construction will begin in August 2016. The building will open for the fall 2018 semester. "This building will directly impact student success," said President James Ramsey. "It will address the severe lack of classroom space for our undergraduate students. It will combine several key student services in one location, making it easier for our students to get the support they need. And it will allow us, through our Academy for Teaching, to share resources and ideas that will enable our faculty to more eff ciently and effectively teach our students." According to a Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education study, UofL had the most signif cant shortage of classroom space among all Kentucky's public universities. The new facility will be built on the site that currently houses Crawford Gym, which once served as the practice facility for the UofL basketball and swimming programs. Demolition of Crawford will begin in August 2016. CEHD dean named AACTE executive College of Education Dean Ann Larson has been elected to the Board of Directors Executive Board for the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. A 20-year veteran of AACTE, Larson was recognized for her role in helping to develop the CEHD's Clinical Model of Teacher Preparation. The model trains P-12 teachers for the classroom with a combination of professional development courses and hands-on experience, and has been used to enrich teachers, principals, counselors and others at several elementary and middle schools in West Louisville that are part of UofL's Signature Partnership. AACTE works with over 800 colleges to improve the quality of educator preparation programs nationwide. Its president and CEO, Sharon Porter Robinson, is the granddaughter of Woodford R. Porter, the former UofL trustee and benefactor now honored by the Porter Scholarship. "It is my sincere honor and pleasure to have been elected to AACTE's Board of Directors and the Board of Directors Executive Board and to represent Kentucky and the University of Louisville," said Larson. "Working with Dr. Sharon Robinson, her team of executives and staff, and the AACTE Board of Directors is a once-in-a-lifetime professional opportunity." As a member of the board, Larson will help determine policies that guide AACTE's program of activities. Larson A rendering of the new academic building for Belknap Campus.
