A little detective work yields priceless information
We all have those dusty boxes of photos from years ago in our basements and attics. However, many of those "unforgettable" images, names and locations have been erased from memory because there is no identifying information on the backs of the photos. It's a conundrum that the University Archives' photo collection stewards face
each day, but thanks to the dedicated detective work of an alum, those mystery faces, names and locations are springing back to life. In the summer of 2010, Steve Gruebbel, 71S, followed a link to the University
Libraries' Digital Collections website from a UofL alumni e-newsletter and stumbled upon a black-and-white photo from the late 1960s. Its caption read: "UofL varsity Cardinal Cheerleaders stand in a line in an unidentifi ed outdoor stadium." It wasn't "unidentifi ed" to Gruebbel. He shot the 1969 photo (at the old Cardinal Stadium) and others when he was photographer for UofL's yearbook, "The Thoroughbred." Gruebbel's original prints are now among the holdings of University Archives and Records Center (UARC). Gruebbel said he contacted the archives with updated information on those
photos. "I also mentioned I still had a box of negatives from that era if they'd be interested." They were very interested, said archivist Carrie Daniels. Gruebbel not only offered his negatives to UofL; he also volunteered to scan
and identify the subject matter. Over seven months he digitized a little more than 1,500 negatives. More important, "He gave us some of the most detailed descriptions we have for that type of material," Daniels said. "That is where we struggle. If people, places and dates haven't been identifi ed on the back (of a photo), we often don't know who they are, or where or when the photo was taken." Gruebbel started a Flickr web page (tinyurl.com/UofLfl ickrPhotos) to share the
photos with former classmates. "Without exception, everyone I contacted was tickled to take my nostalgic tour."
Some people even added names or pointed him to friends who could help, Gruebbel said. "Once I began going through the images and re-living some of my history, it became obvious that the real value would be in making the images available to the other folks who lived them. It made me wish that I had started earlier," he added. The journey isn't over. Gruebbel's Flickr site is still active and about one-fourth of
the negatives he scanned are in the UofL Images set of University Libraries Digital Collections (digital.library.louisville.edu/collections/uofl Images/). Click on the links to scan the photos and see if any memories surface. It will be a walk down memory lane.
UofL School of Nursing receives 10-year stamp of approval
The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) has reaffi rmed the quality of education at the University of Louisville School of Nursing by giving the school reaccreditation of the baccalaureate and master's degree programs for 10 years, the maximum length of time the CCNE will reaccredit nursing programs. "As a school of nursing, it is imperative
to hold to high standards and continue to conduct quality improvement on our mission, resources, curriculum and student and faculty achievements. Our students are proud to be part of a CCNE-accredited school, which leverages our baccalaureate graduates for advancing to earn their gradu- ate degrees," said Marcia Hern, EdD, CNS, RN, dean and professor, UofL School of Nursing. The University of Louisville has gradu-

Ranked in the top 60 nursing graduate schools in the nation, UofL has a near 100 percent certifi cation pass rate for nurse prac- titioners. The school's CCNE accreditation continues through December 31, 2021.
