Here's more about Notre Dame: • There are nearly six applicants for each freshman position, and seventy percent of incoming freshmen were in the top 5 percent of their high school class. • Notre Dame consistently ranks among the na- tion's top 25 institutions in surveys conducted by U.S. News & World Report, Princeton Review, Time, Kiplinger's, and Kaplan/Newsweek. • Engineering professor Albert Zahm proposed the fi rst modern method for launching airplanes and manually controlling them in fl ight in 1893 – 10 years before the Wright brothers' fi rst fl ight. • Notable alumni: TV icon Regis Philbin, former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Bellarmine University President Joseph McGowan and NFL Hall of Famers Paul Hornung and Joe Montana. ACC epting the invitation ACC epting the invitation Meet the neighbors It's been over a year since UofL fi rst announced it would join the Atlantic Coast Conference. This is the third installment in a series of three previews, providing background on our new conference neighbors and highlighting UofL's ongoing research and academic work with ACC universities. UofL proudly "ACCepts the Invita- tion" through both athletics and academics. Wake Forest Located in Winston-Salem, N.C., Wake Forest University strives to be the nation's premier collegiate university, balancing the personal attention of a small liberal arts college with the scholarly opportunities of a large research university. Here are some quick facts about Wake Forest: • Ranked 23rd among national universities in the 2013 edition of U.S. News & World Report's Guide to America's Best Colleges. • Ranked No. 11 among national universities on its "Strong Commitment to Teaching" list. • 4,800 undergraduate and 2,800 graduate students. • The Wake Forest community embraces its mission of educating the whole person within its motto, Pro Humanitate, which means "for humanity." • Notable Alumni: Legendary golfer Arnold Palmer, journalist Al Hunt; sportscaster Billy Packer; NBA All Stars Tim Duncan and Chris Paul. UofL and Florida State: Debunking the atheist myth Are atheists, who do not believe in a higher being or an afterlife, more likely to be criminals than religious people? It's a subject tackled by a team of researchers including sociol- ogy professor Ryan Schroeder, PhD, and former UofL student and current Florida State criminology graduate student Erinn Broadus. The results may surprise you. "There's been a long standing view among the general public that atheists or agnostics, because they don't believe in a God or afterlife, have no moral compass and offend at a rate higher than religious believ- ers. But our research proved just the opposite," Schroeder said. The research, conducted and ana- lyzed over a three-year period, shows that atheists and the devout commit crimes at nearly the same low rate. It also shows that most offenses are perpetrated by those who believe in a higher power but are not dedicated to religious ideals. Schroeder, who has a long-stand- ing research history throughout the ACC, says his work won't be used to prof le potential offenders, but rather to shatter the myth that links atheists to criminal activity. "Atheists are seen as the most problematic group in America. They are seen as immoral and inclined to bad behavior. This data proves otherwise."
