Nearest Alumni Club Contact Louisville Alumni of Washington, D.C. — Amelia Baldree — dcuoflalumni@gmail.com DUKE UNIVERSITY Durham, NC Nickname: Blue Devils Road Trip: 8 hours 40 minutes Where the Students Go: With thick, juicy burgers, deep-fried pickles and duck-fat fries, Bull City Burger & Brewery certainly isn't health fare, but it is soooo worth it. They've also got a great selection of craft beers, and even give brewery tours most Saturday afternoons. Just a half-mile down the street, Fullsteam is another great local brewery and tavern where kids are welcome until 9pm. Those who favor slightly more exotic fare flock to Mateo, a new and wildly popular Spanish tapas bar. Famous Traditions: No need to hide your couches. After major sports victories, Duke students celebrate in the main quad where residence hall benches are sacrificed and burned in the traditional bonfire. While You're There: With its stately 1920s architecture, the city-owned Carolina Theater offers something to appeal to every taste, from film festivals and stand-up comedy to indie bands and jazz soloists. Nearest Alumni Club Contact Louisville Alumni of North Carolina Research Triangle — Rhonda Gardner — rhondadgardner@gmail.com CLEMSON UNIVERSITY Clemson, SC Nickname: Tigers Road Trip: 7 hours 21 minutes Where the Students Go: Once a gas station and grocery store, The Esso Club boasts the oldest beer license in town and is far and away the favorite bar among Clemson loyalists. Out-of-towners agree: The club was named one of the top college sports bars by ESPN magazine and is often frequented by visiting network sportscasters. Another local institution, '55 Exchange, is a student-run ice cream shop that scoops flavors like Cheesecake Su- preme and Pineapple Upside Down Cake. Famous Traditions: Before each home game, Clemson football players run to the top of The Hill where they rub Howard's Rock for luck before a cannon sounds. BOOM! The Tigers charge down the hill and onto the field to the sounds of the Tiger Rag and thousands of screaming fans. While You're There: Open to the public seven days a week, the South Carolina Botanical Garden features nearly 300 acres of nature trails, streams and woodlands and is also home to the historic Hanover House and pioneer village. Nearest Alumni Club Contact Louisville Alumni of Charlotte — Jerry Hunter — juhunter@hotmail.com BOSTON COLLEGE Boston, MA Nickname: Eagles Road Trip: 14 hours 35 minutes Where the Students Go: Any restaurant that serves up a 12-pound "Eagle Burger" is bound to be popular with ravenous college dudes, and Eagles Deli is no exception. This cozy little joint was named one of Travel Channel's "Best Places to Pig Out" and locals crowned its burgers "Best of Boston." For a more upscale experience, dine on fresh oysters, lobster bisque and craft cocktails at Island Creek Oysters, then polish it off with a slice of that heavenly Boston cream pie from Mike's Pastry. Famous Traditions: Better brush up on your Neil Diamond. In recent years, the Fenway Park favorite, "Sweet Caroline," has been adopted by BC students, who are known to belt out the song at major sporting events. While You're There: You don't have to roam far to stumble upon a treasured piece of American history, from the Paul Revere House and Fanueil Hall to the Bunker Hill Monument. The USS Constitution, docked in the inner harbor, is also a must. Nearest Alumni Club Contact Louisville Alumni of Boston — Rebecca Spanos — uoflbostonalumni@gmail.com WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY Winston-Salem, NC Nickname: Demon Deacons Road Trip: 9 hours 13 minutes Where the Students Go: Many a rock band got its start in a garage, and in Winston-Salem, The Garage is still the place Wake students go to hear the best of up-and-coming alternative bands. After a late night, there's nothing like piping-hot donuts and coffee, so cozy up to a chrome-trimmed table at the Krispy Kreme shop on the site of the iconic donut maker's very first store. And of course, a trip to North Carolina wouldn't be complete without a taste of that famous wood- smoked pit barbeque, and The Original Little Richard's is the best place to do it. Famous Traditions: You might see football fans toting toilet paper to the games, but there's no reason to be alarmed about the restroom condi- tions. They just want to be the first to race back to the quad and begin the traditional rolling of the trees after a Demon victory. While You're There: The city's downtown arts district, which features over a dozen galleries of regional artists and craftspeople, hosts a gallery hop on the first Friday of every month. But if you need a little more speed in your college visit, check out the Winston Cup Museum's collection of racecars and NASCAR memorabilia. Nearest Alumni Club Contact Louisville Alumni of North Carolina Research Triangle — Rhonda Gardner — rhondadgardner@gmail.com FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY Tallahassee, FL Nickname: Seminoles Road Trip: 9 hours 56 minutes Where the Students Go: Go to Guthrie's and get the Gut Box (fried chicken, dipping sauce, fries and Texas toast), wash it down with an ice-cold glass of sweet tea and you'll quickly discover the delicious source of many a Seminole's Freshman 15. When you're ready to party, slip into Bullwinkle's Saloon or AJ Sports Bar and Grill — both are Talla- hassee traditions that attract a huge college crowd and game day revelry. Bullwinkle's also hosts local bands several nights a week. Famous Traditions: Those Seminoles are not horsing around! Before the start of each home game, Chief Osceola charges onto the field riding an Appaloo- sa and plants a flaming spear at midfield, prompting fans to start the school's famous war chant. While You're There: St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge provides a protected habitat for alligators, bald eagles, black bears and many species of birds. You could easily spend a sunny afternoon hiking the refuge's extensive trail system. Nearest Alumni Club Contact Louisville Alumni of Orlando — Elizabeth Wardle — liz@lizkos.net
