E D U News & Impact Opening their hearts and their suitcases UofL students stepped up as part of the solution when Louis- ville non-prof t WaterStep needed help transporting 60 water purif - ers to the typhoon-torn Philip- pines. In addition to providing dental cleanings and interactive educational workshops, each of the 34 students bound for Cebu City through UofL's International Service Learning Program (ISLP) December 6-16 also agreed to tote chlorination units overseas. "We're so thankful to you all," WaterStep founder Mark Hogg said. He and other WaterStep representatives arrived a few days later to train people to install the 60 units to turn polluted, disease-causing sources into safe drinking water. Elliott Bauer, 13S, of Louis- ville raised enough money per- sonally to take a unit to Cebu's Paril School, where he had taught in the 2012 ISLP trip and longed to return. Bauer trained 150 people to use the WaterStep equipment, which will replace the school's unusable pump and serve as a community resource for clean water.
