Grawemeyer Awards go to ﬁ ve winners
Djuro Zivkovic Antonio Damasio Jacques Hymans
A Bach-inspired piece for chamber orchestra and books offering new insight on evangelical Christians, nuclear weapons, education
reform and decision-making earned 2014 Grawemeyer Awards in late November.
Serbian-born composer Djuro Zivkovic, University of Southern California scholars Jacques Hymans and Antonio Damasio,
New York University education historian Diane Ravitch and Stanford University anthropology professor Tanya Luhrmann
received the $100,000 prizes. Here's why:
Zivkovic, a 38-year-old violinist and violist
who teaches at the Royal College of Music in
Stockholm, Sweden, wrote "On the Guard-
ing of the Heart," a 20-minute instrumental
cantata for a 14-piece orchestra described as
having "unnatural, echoing beauty."

Hymans, an international relations associ-
ate professor at USC, explained in his book
"Achieving Nuclear Ambitions: Scientists,
Politicians and Proliferation" how manage-
ment by dictatorial leaders has hindered
efforts by developing nations to build
Damasio, a professor of psychology,
neuroscience and neurology at USC, did
pioneering research on how emotions
inf uence the way people make decisions,
a f nding that has had a major impact in
the study of drug addiction, social commu-
nication, education and law.
Ravitch, a New York University education
research professor, showed in her book
"The Death and Life of the Great American
School System: How Testing and Choice Are
Undermining Education" why public school
reform has failed in the United States.
Luhrmann, a Stanford University psycho-
logical anthropologist, studied Vineyard
Christian Fellowship, an evangelical
church whose members speak in tongues
and pray for healing, and found they had
trained their minds to experience God
Charles Grawemeyer, a UofL alum and
philanthropist, created the awards in 1984.
The 2014 winners are scheduled to give
public talks in Louisville in April. Read
