S O A R I N G C A R D S Brown Fellows: Jessica Nelson, 13A BACKGROUND: The Brown Fellows Program, administered by the James Graham Brown Foundation, prepares motivated students from UofL and Centre College for successful careers. The program features a heavy focus on enrichment experiences that include research, feld-based study, community service and close work with faculty mentors. Ten students each from UofL and Centre are named Brown Fellows each year and receive full tuition and an allowance for room, board and books. Each student also receives additional funds to support their individual enrichment plan. The James Graham Brown Foundation fosters the well-being, quality of life and image of Louisville and Kentucky by actively supporting and funding projects in the felds of civic affairs, economic development, education, and health and general welfare. Since 1954, the James Graham Brown Foundation, Inc., has awarded more than 2,650 grants totaling approximately $435,800,000. The Brown Fellows scholarship program is one of many charitable endeavors managed by the Brown Foundation. GIVING THANKS: "The Brown Foundation gave me the freedom to craft the absolutely perfect college experience," said Lexington, Ky., native Jessica Nelson, 13A. Nelson, 22, entered the School of Medicine this semester with a goal of becoming a surgeon who works in developing countries. Her love of international travel was fostered by the Brown Fellows scholarship. The Brown Fellows scholarship encourages a yearly enrichment project, so Nelson put her mind to overseas travel, studying leadership training in Panama and ancient Greek literature in Greece. "Next, I went literally all the way around the world," Nelson explained. "I started in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where I did an internship in a rural clinic and then I went to Abuja, Nigeria, where I volunteered with local schools and did development work with their local Millennium Development Goals offce." In her fnal undergraduate year at UofL, she visited Jodhpur, India, where she conducted public health research that focused on improving a targeted intervention project aimed at decreasing the incidence of HIV/AIDS in the female sex worker population. The Brown Fellows program is unique in allowing students across all majors to focus on their passions and career goals. "The Brown Foundation is convinced that we can do absolutely anything — things that will change the world — and is just so excited to give us the resources to make our insane, meandering dreams into reality," said Nelson.
