H A P P E N I N G H E R E 'This I Believe' What do you believe? It's a simple question, yet intensely personal. UofL's Campus is buzzing with that thought as students, faculty and staff take part in the yearly Book-in-Common program. "This I Believe: The Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men and Women," a book of short stories and refections by famous faces and everyday people, is based on a popular 1950s radio program of the same name, which was hosted by Edward R. Murrow. The radio show was resurrected by Bob Edwards, 69B, in 2005, and airs weekly on Sirius XM radio and NPR. The This I Believe organization is based in Louisville and managed by Mary Jo Gediman, 93A, and her husband, Dan. First-year students are assigned a Book-in-Common at summer orientation (and all other students, alumni and faculty are encouraged to participate) and discussions and events are wrapped around the book. All are encouraged to post their own personal essays on louisville.edu/bookincommon through the Offce of First Year Initiatives. A snapshot of thoughts gathered so far includes an entry from frst-year dental student Heather Haines, 12A. "I believe in giving compliments to complete strangers," she wrote. She struggled with making friends as a child, and a chance compliment in a school hallway introduced her to a friend for life. "We met and helped change each other's lives for the better," she said. "I decided I would take the time and courage to approach complete strangers to compliment them. This has afforded me beautiful friendships, the man of my dreams, great conversations and life lessons." Essays showing belief in action that are posted to the UofL site will be reviewed by the This I Believe organization for consideration for inclusion in upcoming books, discussions and broadcasts nationwide. louisville's premier STUDENT LIVING apply online today Great location–walk to class.
