F R O M T H E P R E S I D E N T Inside the Oval Dear friends and alumni of UofL, I started the April 10 community celebration honoring the success or our men's and women's basketball programs by asking, "Is it a good time to be a Louisville Cardinal?" Twenty thousand people loudly responded "YES!" Those 20,000 people in the KFC Yum! Center showed up to cheer on our student athletes and their coaches. But, it was also a great time for all of us, whether attending the celebration or not, to stick out our chests and show our immense pride, not only for our successes on the athletic feld of play, but for UofL as a whole — academics, research and the improvements to our campuses and campus life. Those successes don't just happen. It takes hard work, determination and a great support system. Coach Rick Pitino's squad endured his tough practices, relentless preaching about the value of playing tough defense and "no excuses" approach to pursue and capture a national championship. In the same way, our faculty, staff, students and administrators have refused to let obstacles like fewer fnancial resources shake our resolve to attain our goal of being a premier metropolitan research institution as mandated by state law. We're a "no excuses" university on a path to becoming one of the nation's best. In this special commemorative issue of the UofL Magazine you'll fnd some amazing stories about our UofL family — yes, our family — from the tight-knit women's basketball team's Cinderella story to the determination shown by our baseball team as they headed to the College World Series, and certainly, the incredible compassion and resolve shown by our men's basketball team following Kevin Ware's gruesome leg injury in the regional fnal game. I'll never forget the scene that unfolded — Luke Hancock comforting and praying with his fallen teammate as he lay on the foor of Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. To me, that exemplifes the type of students, faculty and staff we have at UofL — a family whose members comfort each other in down times and root for each other all of the time. We're rooting for our students. UofL is proud to claim seven new Fulbright Award winners, as well as several other students who earned prominent academic awards including prestigious Goldwater, Truman, Boren, Mary Churchill and Erasmus Mundus scholarships. We're cheering on faculty member and chemistry professor G.B. Hammond for his Fulbright Award and Dr. Suzanne Ilstad for her research to eliminate the need for rejection drugs after kidney transplants. In this issue, you'll also read about UofL's partnership with Wayside Christian Mission's Hotel Louisville — an inspirational and moving story about how this dynamic collaboration has produced real, life-changing results in how our community approaches homelessness. Our UofL family is cheering for all of them! That's what makes this university — our university — a special place that our alumni can be proud to call "alma mater." There's little question that right now is not just a good time to be a Louisville Cardinal, it's a great time to be a Louisville Cardinal! I want you to have this commemorative decal to display your Cardinal pride. "There's little question that right now… is a great time to be a Louisville Cardinal" James R.
