H A P P E N I N G H E R E A family legacy: The Weiss Reading Room When future health care professionals hit the books, it's usually for the long haul — as many as six to eight hours at a time — which is why the Weiss Reading Room at the Kornhauser Health Sciences Library is so invaluable. "They like to spread out and make themselves comfortable. They set up camp," said library director Neal Nixon. The recently created study room allows them quiet study space to do just that and as they camp there, they beneft from a family connection to the university that dates back to the 19th century. Physicians Morris and Terry Weiss furnished the room to celebrate a family legacy at the School of Medicine beginning with the 1894 graduation of Morris' maternal uncle. Morris' father, Morris Sr., graduated in 1925, established a cardiology practice in Louisville and taught at the School of Medicine for more than 30 years. Morris, also a cardiologist, earned his medical degree from UofL in 1958. His wife, Terry, made a career switch to medicine from nonproft administration and graduated in 2000. She has a family practice and a family legacy of her own: One of her ancestors attended UofL from 1868 to 1869. The Weiss family's support of Kornhauser also includes donations of more than 1,800 books from Morris' and his father's personal collections (200 books from Morris Sr.'s collection predate 1850). Morris is also a long-time member of the Friends of Kornhauser Library Board.
